For healthy people, a gallon of water a day should be sufficient. For others, however, a half-gallon of water is adequate. This amount will vary based on your activity level and calorie intake. Food is also a good source of water. Even raw fruit and vegetables like strawberries contain some water. Strawberries contain over ninety percent water. However, different diets naturally contain various amounts of water. In North America, for instance, most people get approximately 20 percent of their daily water from food. Although this number may not seem like a lot, it counts towards healthy hydration. When you are dehydrated, your energy level and mood may suffer.
Other vital fluids in the body are essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women drink at least two liters of water daily, while men should consume 2.4 liters (9 cups) daily. Those with high physical activity levels should drink 2.8 liters of fluid daily. This may be sufficient if they have an average diet and exercise level.
