Does a Water Filter Remove Fluoride?

The first step in the process of removing fluoride from water is to make sure the water is as pure as possible. Typically, a water filter will use an activated alumina filter to do so. This type of filter will only remove fluoride when the pH level is at an optimal level. Water that is highly mineralized can contain a large amount of fluoride. The next step is to determine whether the water you drink contains high levels of fluoride.

The ProMax FS10 from ProOne, which is less expensive, removes 88% of fluoride. This product is manufactured by ProOne USA, the same company that produces the Aquasana water filter. The unit has a capacity of 365 gallons and lasts nine months. In addition to reducing fluoride, this system also removes 71 other contaminants, including cadmium, asbestos, and pharmaceuticals.

Reverse osmosis filters are the most effective way to eliminate fluoride from water. These point-of-use systems, such as the Springwell SWRO-Nickel or SWRO-Bronze, remove fluoride at specific locations. In addition to being compact, these filters fit under any sink, and are often not visible. Alternatively, reverse osmosis filters are more expensive than activated alumina filters.

While activated alumina filters do remove fluoride, they are limited in their ability to reduce arsenic and high TDS levels. In addition, the activated alumina filtration process is complex. Reverse osmosis systems use pressure to force water across a porous membrane. This process removes fluoride and other minerals from water. Reverse osmosis systems are ideal for home use.
